Režisér Marc Rothemund není první, kdo na filmové plátno převedl drama posledních dnů členů ilegální skupiny Bílá růže. Na začátku 80. let vznikly dva filmy inspirované těmito událostmi, jejichž autory byli režiséři Michael Verhoeven a Percy Adlon. Rothemundův snímek předčí tyto poměrně akademické filmy tím, že režisér si za ústřední hrdinku vybral postavu Sophie Schollové, skrze niž se mu daří drama sugestivně přiblížit. Tomuto silnému filmu o osobní statečnosti několika mladých studentů dominuje autentický projev Julie Jentschové v hlavní roli.
